Free Mvmt (Movement) Shop’s mission is to bring people together by offering unique movement-based fitness practices, by breathing life into unused commercial real estate in the Chicago area, and by supporting local nonprofits in the process. We are committed to providing a positive, nonjudgemental environment for all people to move freely and express themselves.
Our Movement Philosophy
We believe that through moving the body with intention, one can attain incredible results in terms of fitness, health, and happiness. This is why all of our programming is based around human movement and not workouts that rely on expensive or complicated equipment. We also believe that fitness should be something to enjoy. Too often, being physically active becomes another task to check off a list, a mindless quest to burn calories and build muscle. Free Mvmt Shop breaks that mold with a different energy. We foster a social, creative, and playful environment where you can push yourself to the limit, develop new capabilities, and have a rocking time. We hope you will join the mvmt!
Our Pop-Up Model
At Free Mvmt Shop, we do more with less. Because we invest in people and space, instead of things, we are able to quickly get set up and take advantage of great short-term rental opportunities. This allows us to offer excellent instruction at extremely accessible prices. Our inaugural "pop-up" location is 3649 N Southport Ave. We will be operational here from Jan 1, 2018 until April 30, 2018—and not a day longer as the building will literally be torn down in May. We couldn’t let this former dry cleaners go to waste and we promise you that we will make the most of the four months we have this space.
Ashley is a professional dancer who has performed with Giordano Dance Chicago, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, C5, and Beyonce. Yes, that Beyonce. Television and print work includes the Billboard Music Awards, Oprah’s Last Show, and the cover of Dance Magazine. Her passion for community organizing and philanthropy led her to start Dancers Awareness Project whose mission is to connect dancers through impactful work in the world. Free Mvmt Shop is a natural extension of her belief that community comes first and a marriage of her eye for design, movement, teaching, people and giving back. All under one roof.
